resolving [Thursday 3 July, 2008 21h13]

i have decided to eat healthy and exercise. i've been tracking my food all week on daily plate and it's going okay... if I could drink less, that'd be good. I mean, i can't believe I consumed 600 calories of alcohol last night. That's a little above average, sure, but I do drink almost every night (I've found out, now that I track).

Part of the reason I have this new resolution is to help my husband out. since getting married, we've collectively put on like 60 pounds. I've never really gained weight before and it's freaking me out. also, the doctor said some not-so-encouraging things about the man's health, and I feel like I'm partially to blame because I love going out to eat and making cheesy foods.

people are annoying about weight loss! I mean, if we talk about saving money, everyone's pretty cool and honest and advice-giving about it. there are lots of logical ways to make yourself save... budgeting, direct deposit changes, the cash method, etc. when it comes to weight loss everyone's just like, "get off your ass and stop eating shit." um, thanks, I can do basic consume-burn calorie storage math. human brain discipline is the challenge. I have a bad habit of going on these little fitness kicks once a year or so, and it always fizzles out.

there's a health club about 3/4 mile from where I live, so I think I'll join that. I'm going to buy a new yoga DVD tomorrow. I made a spreadsheet that says what I'd like to weigh every week if I lose 1 lb a week.

I know I'm not fat, but I also know that I just don't feel great. I've got that nasty out of shape feeling and the extra 10-15 lbs confirm it for me. i'll feel better if I'm active and eating less. I'll sleep better. have better posture. it all goes together.

Decided that Ringo the boy cat could sleep in the caravan with us last night. It was all well and good until we turned out the light and heard and rustling noise and then some crunching.

Ringo was eating Clinkers (those chocolates with the coloured lollie stuff in the middle).

EATING MY CHOCOLATE.

AND DROOLING ALL OVER IT.

So we rescued the un-droolified clinkers from the cat and left all the bitten ones for him.

Woke up this morning and there was naught left except for some crumbs.

Note to self:

Ringo is a sugar fiend. I've caught him before ripping open all sorts of packages. But this time, he's gone too far.

Free beech laminate boards [Thursday 3 July, 2008 20h53]

ottawa

[onprinciple]
I have various pieces of beech coloured laminate wood (and a glass door) left over from partially taking apart an entertainment unit.  There are about a dozen pieces in total.  The pieces are perfect for shelving (one or two boards could be cut in to a billy bookcase size) or to be sawed up for art.

The colour is the same as Ikea's beech pressed board.

Pick-up only.

If interested, please call Stacey at 613-862-3556.

Cellphone services... [Thursday 3 July, 2008 19h48]

[8bit_tanuki]
I'm looking for a cellphone provider that runs at a cheaper rate to Telus.

Currently it's around $42/mth for the package I have. I would like to get it down to a lower price.

I would go to a pay as you go phone, but I'd rather not lose my current number.

So which companies are worth looking into? Rogers? Bell? Fido? What are your experiences with each company and who would you recommend to me?

Thanks in advance!

*quick edit* Thanks a bunch for all the replies. I'm hummin' and hawin' over it still and think I'll go into Telus and see if anything can be changed with my current plan.

And to answer some questions.
- I don't text, email nor use the web via phone
- I do use the phone for quick calls or for emergencies
- Caller ID and voice mail are both necessary
- Keeping my current phone number is necessary

Trying to think of other things, but drawing a blank. I will, however, try to respond to all comments after I've had some sleep. Thanks again!

Looking for a loft [Thursday 3 July, 2008 16h23]

mtlchick
And so my search begins again.
I'm looking for an artist's loft somewhere on the island (west is preferrable) that's near a metro.
If you have one for rent, have a connection, have walked by a sign, let me know. It's not urgent but I'm expecting to have to move out of my current place in the next few months.
Nothing over $700, otherwise hit me with whatever you can. The place doesn't have to take musicians or animals.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the x-posting.

Better days. [Thursday 3 July, 2008 12h24]

swestrup
Yesterday was a headache day for everyone in the household. Even our guest Terry woke up with one, although our symptoms were all different. Terry attributed his to a lack of fresh air and sunlight and did report feeling better after a walk. I had my usual pounding head which, even with prompt administration of migraine meds, took something like 10 hours to completely go away.

[info]taxlady got the worst of it. She had only a minor headache but it was accompanied by vertigo, nausea and throwing up. It was bad enough that I phoned Info-Sante (which I was surprised and happy to see now has an 8-1-1 phone number) . Given the symptoms I think the nurse would have been far more concerned if we hadn't been able to tell her that [info]taxlady had been seen by a neurologist and had her blood work done within the last month -- and had tested normal in everything. The Nurse said it could be anything from a stroke to a new kind of migraine (for Linda), and to take her to the hospital if there wasn't significant improvement in 2 hours.

Well, an hour later she was feeling better, and had a long nap, and woke up feeling better yet. So, now we're thinking it was the migraine thing. As [info]azrhey says, trying new things is good but migraines? Bad choice.

Today, so far, I'm feeling really good. Not sure if that's just in contrast to yesterday or what, but I'll take what I can get.

[headspace | amused]

"A computer is a very sophisticated idiot. It does exactly what you tell it to do, but very quickly."
  ---The Doctor.

Sometimes, being a lazy bigot creates hilarity. Take, for instance, The American Family Association - which carefully programmed its news website OneNewsNow to change all uses of the word "gay" to "homosexual".  As the Washington Post points out, this caused a slight problem when Tyson Gay posted a record time in the Olympic qualification trials.  OneNewsNow reported the story as follows:

Tyson Homosexual was a blur in blue, sprinting 100 meters faster than anyone ever has.

His time of 9.68 seconds at the U.S. Olympic trials Sunday doesn't count as a world record, because it was run with the help of a too-strong tailwind. Here's what does matter: Homosexual qualified for his first Summer Games team and served notice he's certainly someone to watch in Beijing.

"It means a lot to me," the 25-year-old Homosexual said. "I'm glad my body could do it, because now I know I have it in me."

The Post goes on to say OneNewsNow has fixed the filter, although some archived stories still show up with some interesting replacements.

[headspace | pregnant]

The other day I was at the dep and when I was paying for my stuff at the counter, a woman beside me who was buying cigarettes asked me if I'm 8 months pregnant. Not, "How far along are you?" She asked, "Are you 8 months pregnant?" (Except she said it in French.) When I told her I'm not due until October, she was surprised and asked me if I'm having twins. I thought this was incredibly rude and maybe I should have pretended to be an anti-tobacco advocate and harassed her to quit smoking because it's bad for her. I wonder how she would have reacted to being judged by a nosy stranger.

Strangers are always asking me how far along I am, are surprised by the answer, and then they ask me if I'm having twins. Apparently I'm not the only pregnant woman on my friends' list who has had this problem. Why are people so rude? I blame Nicole Kidman and her invisible baby bump.

Why is it their business how far along I am anyway? It's not like they're making friends with me. They're just random people at the grocery store, on the metro, etc. And can they really tell how many months pregnant a woman is just by looking at her? Everyone's different. My mom says that she got big early on in her pregnancies and didn't gain much weight after that. I see a couple pregnant women a week who are bigger than me, and I see a few who are smaller than me. I'm pregnant! I'm supposed to get big! So fuck off.

At least strangers haven't tried to touch my belly or given me unasked for advise yet, knock on wood.

In other news, my feet are swelling up again. I'm doing everything I'm supposed to do to prevent this. I'm drinking lots of water, taking short walks to promote good circulation, and I'm keeping my feet up a lot. It seems to be linked to moisture in the air, so I need to make it stop being humid and/or rainy.

I'd like to wish a happy birthday to Quebec City, founded 400 years ago today ^_^

This is actually a more honest date for the founding of the country than the 141st-birthday we celebrated a couple of years ago, which really only marked the point when de facto democracy became official and backed up by a constitution, and when some aspects of the law of four provinces were merged. The people who were here already had a rich culture and an identity separate from any of the mother countries, which came into existence starting 400 years ago today.

So effectively, this isn't just Quebec's birthday, but Canada's as well.

And while we're on the subject of national pride, I'm really happy that Henry Morgentaler got the Order of Canada, the country's highest honour.

For those of you who don't know, Morgentaler is the doctor responsible for getting safe, legal abortions in this country. He's a Dachau concentration camp survivor who came over here after World War II. He performed abortions illegally in the 1960s, and spent a time in jail, and a lot more time in court. His clinic was bombed. But 20 years ago, he won the Supreme Court case that overturned the abortion laws.

As he's quite elderly, there was worry that he would die before anyone gave him the Order of Canada -- you can't give that award posthumously. Anti-abortion groups are up in arms, of course.
